GCE War and Migration- from Nora's WW2 Suitcase to Modern Somalia

An excellent example of cross curricular learning involving History, RE and English, and members of the TY GCE class on the theme of migration – past and present and the moral issues around the treatment of migrant workers.

The Junior Cycle English classes were based around ‘Nora’s case’ – a suitcase used by an eight year old evacuee from London in WW11.  These lessons were based on a resource called Beyond Borders which was produced by Galway One World Centre, who also provided us with the loan of the suitcase.  Classes on life as a child refugee in England were prepared by TY GCE students and delivered by Patrick Lane.

The theme of migration was brought up to date by an input on zoom with the 3rd years by Ms Nura Hagi, a long time human rights activist originally from Somalia who spoke about her experience living with conflict in Somalia while working to help people in a dangerous environment.

These lessons form part of our school’s efforts to explore global justice themes through different areas of the curriculum

We are grateful to WorldWise Global Schools (WWGS) for its support of this initiative.
