Global Superstars- Cross- Curricular GCE
Second Year Global Superstars
This was a cross-curricular initiative involving Geography, PE and the TY Global Citizenship Education class. Its aim was to encourage second year students to discover more about the different countries represented in our school community and to find out more about the UN Global Goals.
Members of the TY GCE class were at the heart of all activities undertaken to meet this aim.
To begin with the second year students in each tutorial were split into groups representing different countries and they each randomly chose one of the Global Goals. With the support of their Geography teacher, each group had to design a project based on their country and Global Goal
In PE the TY GCE students, following consultation with their PE teacher, put together a programme of activities that each ‘country’ would take part in during second year PE lessons. These included table tennis, badminton, basketball and a relay race. Points were awarded to each country based on how well they performed in these activities.
When the time came to present the projects in the Geography lessons, all students in attendance (TY and second year) engaged in peer assessment to arrive at what all agreed was the most effective presentation. Based on this and taking account of the scores from the PE activities, the Geography teachers identified a winning ‘country’ from each tutorial.
To mark the conclusion, photos were taken of each team along with their national flag, logo of their Global Goal and name of their country. In addition medals were awarded to the winning country from each tutorial.
The initiative succeeded in its aim of the helping second years become more aware of the different nationalities represented in our school community and also of the UN Global Goals.
A special word of thanks must go to the teachers who supported these activities from the start. Geography teachers Mr Healy, Mr Barrett and Ms Power and PE teacher Ms Love. The painstaking work of painting each of the country signs was undertaken by Veda Murphy and Holly Dunne (TY). The whole of the TY GCE class is to be commended for following through with their plans until completion.
This project forms part of MCS’s long term effort to embed Global Citizenship Education as part of school life and we acknowledge the ongoing support of WorldWise Global Schools (WWGS) to this end.
