Introduction of Individual Devices for TY Students – September 2025

Following consultation with parents, staff, and students, we are pleased to confirm the introduction of individual devices (1:1 devices) for Transition Year (TY) students starting in September 2025 (next year's 5th Year group will not be included). This decision has been made in full partnership with our school community, ensuring that all voices have been heard and concerns carefully considered.

Board of management approval of 1:1 devices at senior cycle

The Board of Management has approved the introduction of 1:1 Devices at Senior Cycle. The Board has also approved significant investment in the school network over the coming months.  The valuable feedback provided throughout this process is deeply valued and appreciated. It has played a crucial role in shaping this initiative. Devices introduced in TY will be used for the full duration of Senior Cycle.

Survey Feedback & Acknowledgment

We extend our sincere gratitude to all Parents/Guardians, Staff, and Students who participated in our survey and discussions. Your insights and perspectives have been instrumental in refining our approach to ensure the successful integration of digital learning tools.

Key Considerations from Consultation

  • Broad Support for the Initiative: A strong majority of parents, staff, and students support the implementation of 1:1 devices for Senior Cycle.

  • Benefits Identified:

    • Aligns with the new Senior Cycle reform, including the 40% Additional Assessment Component (AAC). Subjects will have a project element worth 40% that will be completed in advance of the Leaving Certificate examinations.

    • Enhances digital literacy and prepares students for higher education and future careers.

    • Reduces the weight of school bags, with textbooks primarily used at home.

    • Provides greater flexibility and access to online learning resources.

  • Concerns Raised & Addressed:

    • Ensuring minimal distractions in the classroom – clear usage guidelines will be established. A system will be in place whereby teachers will be able to cast content directly to student devices during class.

    • Managing screen time – a balanced approach will be adopted, maintaining access to physical textbooks.

    • Content Management - the updated network will only allow students to access resources that are whitelisted (permitted) by the school. It is the responsibility of Parents and individual Students to ensure appropriate use of devices outside of school hours.

    • Financial implications – a payment plan will be available, and Millstreet Credit Union has offered support for families in need, subject to credit approval.

    • Technical support – investments in WiFi infrastructure and IT services are being prioritised.

Implementation & Device Usage

  • The devices will be used throughout the three years of Senior Cycle.

  • Each device will be fully equipped with the student’s Office 365 account, online textbooks, and essential learning resources.

  • Hard copies of textbooks will be retained, ensuring a blend of digital and traditional learning. The books will be supplied for free from the beginning of the 2025-25 school year.

  • In August 2026, devices will be updated with the 5th Year Senior Cycle books to align with curriculum needs.

  • TY students will take part in designated classes throughout the 2025-26 school year to upskill in digital competencies, ensuring they are prepared to handle the 5th Year workload when the time comes.

Commitment to Infrastructure & Support

Acknowledging the importance of a seamless transition, we are making a significant investment in upgrading our school’s WiFi network and IT infrastructure to support the effective use of these devices.

Financial Planning & Support

  • The cost of the device will be approximately €650, including a protective hard case and a three-year warranty. Our supplier will manage this directly with Parents.

  • Flexible payment plans will be available to ease the financial burden.

  • Millstreet Credit Union has expressed willingness to assist families requiring financial support, subject to credit approval.

A Collaborative & Positive Change

Through discussions with other schools that have already implemented similar initiatives, we have learned that the transition has been highly beneficial for students and teachers alike. The feedback has reinforced our confidence that this move will enhance learning, digital skills, and student preparedness for the future.

Upcoming Information Meeting

To ensure all Parents/Guardians and students have a full understanding of this initiative, we will be hosting an information evening in the coming weeks. Our device supplier will provide a demonstration, and will be available to address any remaining queries.

We deeply value the partnership of our school community in this decision and look forward to working together to implement this initiative successfully.

Transition Year is a time for participation in all subject areas – again this gives students the time to re-assess their aptitudes before facing the terribly important subject choices for Leaving Certificate. Due to the current Covid-19 School closure, students wishing to participate in TY should submit their application via an online application process.

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme is compulsory for all Senior Cycle students.

Subject choices for the Leaving Certificate are made at the end of Transition Year (or Third Year for those students who do not opt for TY). Choices made at this stage are informed and well thought out. Subjects are timetabled only if there is sufficient demand. Subject choices are completed online through VSware. Parents and students will have the oppurtunity to attend our information night prior to subjects been chosen. Dates for the 2025 Information Night and submission deadlines will be posted here in due course. Parents will log in here and submit subject choices when these dates are finalised.
