Junk Kouture- Brilliant Performances
Our two Junk Kouture recycled fashion designs were proud to carry the MCS flag to the regional finals for the second year running. Two outfits hit the stage, one focusing on ocean waste with an outfit inspired by the beauty of the seas, using marine materials, old National Geographic magazines and recycled plastics reflecting the pollution choking our seas. A whirling performance suggested both joy in the beauty of the oceans and distress at the extent of the pollution crisis. ‘Impi’ is a futuristic robotic warrior, raising questions about artificial intelligence and where technology is leading us. Constructed from bottle tops and recycled electronic components, it combines historic and dystopic imaginings of warfare. Inspired by the zulu word for war, this costume lent itself to a powerful performance on stage.
