Celebrating TY First Year Mentoring programme
Peer mentoring has been an essential part of our school's efforts to help First Year students to make as smooth a transition as possible from national school to MCS. This week provided a chance to celebrate this, Transition Year mentors and all First Year students were presented with certificates to recognise their engagement in this worthwhile programme.
Twenty-five TY students applied before the summer to become mentors to the new First Years. Under the guidance of the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS), they planned sessions to run with the new students to help them settle in to their new surroundings. These have included team activities in the school gym, a quiz, a movie afternoon, a trip to Airtastic as well as being available during the school day should they need some guidance in case they felt unsure about anything.
Their certificates recognised all the effort they put into making the mentor programme a success. The First Years received certificates to acknowledge the way they have wholeheartedly participated in all the sessions planned by the mentors. Although the official events have ended, the mentors remain on hand to support the First Years. Thanks to all who participated and Mr Magee for coordinating.
