Iman Amr Hamad visits MCS
On Monday 7th October we had the privilege of welcoming Imam Amr Hamad to our school. He is in charge of the growing Muslim community in Cork who meet at the Cork Islamic Centre on Tramore Road.
Second Years met with Imam Amr first. The study of Islam, along with Christianity and other world religions, is part of the Junior Cycle RE course and so in the week preceding his visit they were able to come up with some detailed questions about Muslim beliefs and practice. Eleven of the students volunteered to ask the questions during the Imam’s time with them.
The First Years have only just begun their Junior Cycle RE course and so do not know as much about Islam. They prepared well for the visit by reading the relevant sections in the textbook and watching related videos. As a result they were able to devise ten questions to ask the Imam which reflected what they had learned in that short period.
By answering the questions Imam Amr was able to talk about some of the ways Muslims live out their faith. He was also able to clarify some misconceptions there is in society about the Muslim faith.
The visit was a great success and we are grateful to Imam Amr for giving up his time to be with us.
