Niamh Choir of Visionaries!
28 years after her European success in the remarkable Millstreet Eurovision, Niamh Kavanagh returned to visit MCS, bringing back memories of the festivities in the town in 1993. Niamh joined a choir of Ty backing singers to record ‘I’m still standing’. This marks the resilience shown by all students, and reminds us that this too will pass. Classes on mask breaks having a look at Niamh recording was reminiscent of classes visiting rehearsals of Eurovision back in ‘93 as part of their school day. Niamh recorded ‘I’m still standing’ with staff and students, to mark the resilience shown by the school community in getting through two immensely challenging academic years.
Ms Kavanagh recorded the track with a group of 18 transition year students on vocals, four student musicians, Cathy Byrnes on flute, Claire Lyons on violin, Tomás Cronin on electric piano and Katie O’Sullivan on concertina, supported by Mr Ó Síodhcháin on keyboards and teacher Kevin O’Neill on the button accordion. The students have worked hard and adapted quickly to the new systems over the last 15 months, and certainly earned the day of celebration. After the recording, the TYs got a singing masterclass from the amazing vocalist, so look out for another Eurovision winner from Duhallow in the near future.
