Fast Fashion- the Cliff at End of the Catwalk
This year's TY Global Citizenship Education (GCE) class have decided to build on the work done by last year's group, and explore the urgent matter of waste and the fashion industry, in particular fast fashion. This is when clothes are produced at low cost and sold at such low prices in some well known high street stores. 'Fast fashion is ‘fast’ in a number of senses: the rate of production is fast; the customer’s decision to purchase is fast; delivery is fast; and garments are worn fast, usually only a few times before being thrown away.' The class of 20/21 decided to make a film highlighting the down side of fast fashion, not just in terms of the wages and working conditions of the people who manufacture the garments, but also the environmental impact of the fashion industry as a whole, which is thought to be the second biggest polluter in the world. The students also offer suggestions in the film as to how we might change our own shopping habits in order to make a positive change. This is the first of a number of activities the GCE class are planning for the rest of the year on this important topic. Thanks to Chloe Bailey for her help in the production of this film.
