Safer Internet Day (SID) is an EU wide initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people. The Theme for Safer Internet Day 2019 is “Together for a Better Internet“.

MCS marked this day by raising awareness of key issues about safer internet use. T.Y. students conducted a survey of 195 students on their social media usage and experiences, and presented their findings on the Safe Internet notice board.

Classes also took a fake news quiz to highlight the need for critical awareness with news and media. and Tech Graphics classes in First Year had an safe internet emoji competition, with the winning posters displayed in the school. The winners included 5th Year Ashley, T.Y.’s Jack and Tia, as well as Second Years Molly and Briana, and First Year emoji designers Rachel and Holly. Thanks to teachers Ms Power, Mr Breen and Mr Horan who facilitated the event.

The survey revealed the risks around social media and the need to be in control of your online profile. If you wish to see more advice on young people and social media, click here. https://www.webwise.ie/category/parents/advice/
